Lapageria rosea
A plant for the very very patient. Germinates easily enough if certain conditions are met, then produces a pair of leaves and does nothing for a couple of years. Even after that don't hold your breath for much excitement. Endangered in the wild apparently, I wonder why..?
Laurus nobilis
The bay tree grows quite quickly so get a cutting off someone and save your money.
Leucadendron 'safari sunset'
Protea type of thing, slow growing. Probably more worth it if it was bushier.
Lillium
Easy enough to grow from bulbs. Grow in pots, water well until flowering then stop altogether. Move the pots out of sight when flowering is over. I have given up lilies due to the lily beetle.
Lobelia cardinalis
Dark vivid red flowers on top of dark stems. Easy from seed but a real slug magnet. Grow it in a swamp pot to keep the slugs off, then pray there will be no wind. Given up on this.
